Placer High School
Kennedy Haswell scored on a penalty kick in the second half, and Emma Whigam made three saves as Placer Highâs girls soccer team beat Lincoln 1-0 on Wednesday in a match moved to Del Oro High because of rain.
Coach Megan Montoya said twins Emma and Rachel Roche were stalwarts for the Hillgals in a game beset by difficult conditions. Placer played into a strong wind in the first half, and Emma Roche led a strong defensive effort against a dangerous Lincoln side in forcing a scoreless first half.
The second half, Montoya said, midfielder Rachel Roche and teammates, now playing with the wind, maintained possession, largely in Lincolnâs half of the field, most of the time. She said Sydney Parson and Mallory Cutter were strong on the edges, forcing the action several times, and praised Haswell in the midfield.
The victory moves Placer to 1-4-2 on the season, 1-0-1 PVL. Placer is scheduled to host Foothill on Monday, but weather and field conditions are likely to force the game to be played at a neutral site.
The JV girls team fell
4-0, but Montoya said the girls played very hard in the second half.
The varsity boys soccer team fell 5-0 to Lincoln. Placer is 3-5-1, 1-1 PVL.
Bear River-Colfax rained out
The varsity boys soccer match between Bear River and Colfax was rained out, coach David Ray said, continuing a trend for the Falcons, whose last match was also canceled.
Ray said the schedule going forward remains uncertain.
