Placer High School
This time, Placerâs girls basketball team made no mistake.
Playing to win the Pioneer Valley League outright against a team that shockingly upset the Hillgals, 48-46, in Auburn on Jan. 27, Placer ran out to a 23-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a convincing 61-34 victory at Lincoln on Tuesday.
âWe did not want a repeat of the first time we played them,â Placer coach Tony Camillucci said.
Mollie Brogdon led a balanced attack with 14 points, and Julia Camillucci had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
âAt haltime, we talked about not letting teams back in,â Tony Camillucci said. âWe havenât had many wins by big margins. We did better in the third quarter and finished strong, which is good.â
Placer (15-11, 8-2) now waits to find out its playoff fate, though with a league title and ranked sixth in Sac-Joaquin Division III, Camillucci expects the Hillgals to host a playoff game next Tuesday.
Itâs a challenge for which he thinks his team is ready.
âI think weâre playing the best basketball we have all season,â he said. âWe had a rough preseason, but thatâs what sports does: Itâs how you deal iwht adversity. Our girls grew a lot, matured a lot, gelled together. Our whole goal all year was to win league. Going into league, we had the worst record. It was nice to turn it around.â
