Hillmen News · Tennis big winners at individual section championships

From Auburn Journal

The Placer High coed tennis team hit even loftier heights on Saturday, prompting coach Tom Isaac to make a bold assertion.

“This team, this year,” he said, “someday, they’ll be in the (Placer High) Athletic Hall of Fame.”

Winning four of the five individual Section titles to cap off a record-breaking season seems to be heady stuff.

That’s precisely what the Hillmen accomplished on Saturday at the Oak Park Tennis Center in Stockton.

Top-ranked boys single Alex Miller cruised 6-1, 6-2 in the final; the freshman has not lost a set all season.

Placer paired its No. 2 singles in the mixed doubles, sending Riccardo Accettulli and Gracie Schoenhoff together, and they came through with a Section title, winning 6-1, 6-4 in the final.

Kolby Hedden and Jason Hensler, nearly as untouchable in doubles as Miller has been in singles, had a tougher time in the final, but they came out hard when pushed to a third set and prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Then there was the girls doubles final, in which Placer managed the ultra-rare feat of placing both of its teams. Meggie Williams and Lexi Heuer defeated Cayenne Gularde and Ashley Clifton 6-2, 6-2.

Even the non-Section title winners put up good showings, playing into Saturday’s second day. Julia Hinshaw won her last match 6-2, 6-3, while Brenden Moley and John Frew placed fourth in boys doubles.

The season’s not over yet, of course, as Placer plays host to Delhi – a school, that is, not the city in India, either old or New – in the Section team playoffs on Monday.

But for a day, at least, the individuals took center stage in this most individual of sports.

“Everybody peaked at the right time,” Isaac said. “All those practices we did while it was raining, all those extra exercises … It’s a pretty cool thing.”
