Boys Basketball · Hillmen battle tough vs Wolfpack

Placer varsity battled hard vs a very athletic, quick, physical Cosumnes Oaks squad but came up empty in the last 4 minutes. Placer Trailed by 1 at the end of first quarter but battled back to take the lead on a 3 pointer by Dylan Ziegelmann at 15-13 early in the 2nd before falling behind by 6 at 22-28 at the half. The 2nd half it was tight throughout and Placer had the lead on 2 different occassions. In the 4th with 5:32 to go Max Petrenko made a bucket and was fouled and completed the old fashion 3 point play to tie the score at 45. Cosmunes Oaks hit a 3 on the next possession, Placer missed an open lay-up, the Wolfpack earned a 3 point playof their own, then a steal and Lay-up by Cosumnes Oaks and on 3 possessions and 3:52 to go Placer found themselves down 8. Cosumnes Oaks hit a couple more jumpers and Placer turned it over 2 more times for lay-ups going the other way and the Wolfpack extended their lead and ended up winning by 18.
Placer coacahing staff was pleased with the effort and the competitive way the team battled but they all know they need to get over the hump and finish games like this in the future. The Hillmen were led by Petrenko with 15 points and 8 boards, Jackson Lee with 12 points and 3 steals, and Ziegelmann with 9 points. The Hillmen fall to 4-5 on the season and are in action next weekend at the Don Nelson Classic in Dublin, CA.
