Placer varstiy basketball team battled all night against a very athletiic and talented Elk Grove team. The Hillmen led by 4 at the half and by 2 at the end of 3 quarters. Placer and Elk Grove exchanged the lead nmerous times in the fourth but 3 empty trips down the floor late in the quarter and a bucket by Elk Groves Britton with 1:22 to go put Elk Grove up by 4 but a Dane Eklund steal and lay-up cut the lead to 2. Placer got a stop but then missed the front end of a 1 and 1 FT attempt and Elk Grove went 1 of 2 from the line on its next poseesion to put the lead to 3 with 58 seconds to go. Placer missed 2 point blank shots before the Thundering Herd grabbed the defensive board. Hillmen trailed by 3 with 48 sec to play. Placer played tough defense but a late foul put the Herd to the line and they sank 2-2 and put the game out of reach. Placer was led by Petrenko with 14, Eklund with 9 and Meyer chipped in 7. Lichau pulled down 10 rebounds. Anson Aroz and Nick Schroeder were applauded for their tough defense. Hillmen played short handed again tonight as the took the floor without senior Dylan Ziegelmann (1 game), Isaiah Chenault(second game) both out with bad ankles Hillmen face Castro Valley iin the 7th place game of the Don Nelson Classic at 2:00 on Saturday.
